Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Shop Spotlight with Rodney Simmons, Revival Home + Interiors of Chattanooga, TN

The New Southern | Shop Spotlight: Rodney Simmons, Owner of REVIVAL

November 13, 2017 in The New Southern

What was once an old, run-down brick building, now a lush, Tennessean dreamland. On Chattanooga’s Warehouse Row, creative energy flurries—echoed in the hearts of designers like Rodney Simmons. The city’s renaissance reflects the essence of The New Southern— where reinterpreting, reinventing, and reimagining flourish.

Rodney envisioned REVIVAL as a place where opposites abound. “I approach design – whether food, music, interiors, or garden – as a series of ‘calls and responses.’ For every matte, something shiny. For every grand, something humble. For every loud, something quiet,” he says. Like the rolling Smoky Mountain hills that encompass this Chattanoogan boutique, there’s no lines to be followed; there’s curves and flexibility, allowing opposites to shine.

Showcasing a hybrid of styles, Rodney allures budding artists and artisans, and we can’t help but be captivated by his embracement of differences. A testament to The New Southern, his brick-and-mortar is a safe haven for creatives to design with an open mind, beckoning those who walk in its doors to look for the beauty in the unexpected. Rodney is the Traditional New Southern, weaving a sense of heritage and sophistication throughout his space, while honoring the past to give meaning to the present.

We chatted with Rodney to uncover how REVIVAL speaks to The New Southern and his thoughts for female entrepreneurs as Southern style shifts in landscape.

Alyssa Rosenheck: Tell me about REVIVAL.

Rodney Simmons: REVIVAL is a modern, Southern purveyor of antiquities, home furnishings, lighting, curious objects, and luxury gifts. Created by myself and Billy Woodall in 2002, this Tennessee-emporium has become a must-shop resource for homeowners and design professionals alike. I spent almost a decade in the New York men’s fashion world creating showroom and retail store environments. After my tenure as Menswear Director of Presentation at Ralph Lauren, I returned to my native South while carrying that design passion as a seed for REVIVAL’s creation. Billy brought his early career’s extensive financial and construction knowledge to REVIVAL, helping the retail business to blossom and grow to include online sales and a separate interior design firm, Revival Interiors.

AR: REVIVAL is filled with visual inspiration from room to room. How has the shop contributed to the modernization or updated Southern style?

RS: REVIVAL is known for crashing unexpected periods, materials, forms and ideas - free of restraints, rules, and establishment expectations. There are no rules.

AR: What innovative trends are you seeing with Southern style across the country?

RS: The best interior designers and merchants (serving as sort of Southern style ambassadors across the U.S.) are indeed freed of expectations and restraints in the new century. With print magazines, non-stop social media, showhouses, trade showrooms, and amazing design shops, Southern style is fueled more by opportunity and creativity than perceived formulas and tradition.

AR: How have you mastered all the growth with the shop?

RS: An amazing core of designers, decorators, and support staff continues to propel REVIVAL’s growth – which includes the retail store, an open-to-the-public Annex warehouse, a highly-stylized interior design studio, and an online website, revivalhome.com. I (the creative) and Billy (the business) lead the pack - opposites do attract.

AR: Is there structure or are there any tips to share when you grow rapidly?

RS: Having a plan, buying the best, hiring the most talented – these are ideas key to a successful business that will survive rapid growth. However, knowing that those ideas are primarily a “map” (and allowing yourself and the business to remain flexible) is of paramount importance.

AR: What advice do you have for female entrepreneurs?

RS: Female design entrepreneurs have such an amazing opportunity in the 21st century. What advice does REVIVAL have for upcoming female entrepreneurs?

Be focused
Be true
Be kind
Be good
Be forthright

Be fun

AR: What’s your life motto?

RS: Borrowed (re: stolen) from my sweet friend Kreis Beall (owner and Creative Director of Tennessee luxury resort Blackberry Farm):

Good, Better, Best
Never let it rest
Until the Good is Better
and the Better is Best

I daily borrow her mantra — always striving for wonderful customer service, beautiful product, and experiential retail.

AR: The place you go to get inspired?

RS: I get inspired in many places, but a few favorites especially fuel my spirit: Le Sirenuse hotel clinging to the Amalfi Coast, the Musee Rodin in Paris, New Orleans on a jasmine-laced night, and the clipped-and-sheared gardens (or the pool) of our home perched atop Missionary Ridge.

AR: How do you continue to differentiate yourself in the marketplace?

RS: REVIVAL competes daily with contemporary online shopping, a buy-it-for-less-do-it-yourself mentality, and overnight immediacy. A carefully edited inventory, the beautiful environment, and purposeful customer service allow REVIVAL’s experiential retail to beckon the chicest of clients. Truly, it is “Lights, Cameras, Action”!

AR: Design advice that you’ve received that made all the difference?

RS: A treasured friend, Bobby McAlpine, encouraged me early as a merchant and designer to acknowledge my own innate style and approach. This lauded master stipulated that, like athletic or musical abilities, I’d need to perpetually exercise, train, use, critique, cross-train, and expose my own design eye or it would be of little value. I’ve never forgotten his quick-but-amazing lesson.

AR: What’s the best piece of design advice you could provide for creative entrepreneurs starting out?

RS: Have fun or go home.

AR: Who are some of your favorite artists/makers?

RS: Bobby McAlpine (and his band of creatives led by Ray Booth and Susan Ferrier) is a long-time favorite architect, designer, poet, and wicked tongue.

Addie Chapin is an adored local Tennessee artist working in mixed media (think paint, brown paper bags, and linen canvas) that at once conjures ancient scrolls, vintage game boards, and a forgiven future. I am thrilled to include her brilliant works among REVIVAL’s treasures.

AR: What’s your advice for mixing old with new?

RS: Mixing of ancient and modern isn’t proprietorial, and is indeed more a manner of design thinking. It’s the tension between opposites (much like between my partner Billy and myself) that creates the most interest and energy.

AR: My momma always said…

RS: HA! My REVIVAL design colleague, Cynthia Mitchell, and I were just recalling Southern childhood colloquialisms, including “You never know where Jesus is….”

What could be more Southern (especially a Samaritan story for a preacher’s son like myself) than to thread a little church into our design work?

For me, my Momma’s directive isn’t only about aiding the needy. Indeed, I think my Momma sort of knows that holiness and glory can be found in the most unexpected places. We just need to look with open eyes and hearts.

For me, that’s the New Southern.

AR: What’s your favorite house-warming gift?

RS: French fragrances are a lush go-to house-warming gift – especially a hand-made candle found at REVIVAL.

Among my favorites? Cire Trudon’s Abd el Kadr (Morrocan mint tea), Diptyque’s Baies Noir and
Mad et Len’s Spirituelle.

Rodney Simmons (right) with business partner

AR: Design book that you will always have on your shelf?

RS: There are a lot of outstanding design books, but my all-time favorite tome is John Saladino’s Villa — this favorite architect-designer’s chronicle of his 1920s Santa Barbara property transformed into the most timeless of estates.

AR: What’s currently on your nightstand?

RS: An Eye for Beauty, the fabulous new design must-read by interior designer Beth Webb (who just happens to be a Lookout Mountain, Tennessee native).

Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Entrepreneur Spotlight with Lee Kleinhelter, Pieces of Atlanta, GA

The New Southern | Entrepreneur Spotlight: Lee Kleinhelter, Owner of Pieces.inc

November 06, 2017 in The New Southern, TNS Spotlight

Whimsy and playful, meet modern and sophisticated. Lee Kleinhelter’s renovated Brookwood Hills, Atlanta abode captures just those words. Nestled among the lush tree-lined streets of this charming Georgian neighborhood, Lee’s home (once dated duplex, now architectural marvel) is a showstopper — making you feel like you’ve stepped into a grown-up treehouse, intertwined with the aura of an astonishing art gallery. Black, white, and gold are met with unexpected and bold pops of color, layered among intricate architectural details and travel-inspired textures. It’s something that makes you stop and stare.

Pieces.inc, Lee’s labor of love centered in the heart of Buckhead, parallels the beauty of her personal home. Like an editor, Lee carefully mixes vintage and contemporary, sprinkling her beloved treasures to make a striking statement. I am attracted to her thrill of the hunt, her willingness to showcase those rare finds that break away from traditional Southern design. But her modern twist  is exactly why I selected her to represent The New Southern. In a city with deep Southern roots, Lee is unpredictable - her vignettes and selections break the rules. "We have always been recognized for having a unique look that has evolved over time. If there is a day you walk in our store and don't think something is interesting or cool, then I need to find another career. We spend a lot of time souring our product, displaying, and obsessing over the details. It’s what we do best,” Lee says.

Whether it’s her eye for clean lines, scale, or pattern play, we applaud this retail artist as she exemplifies what it means to break away from precedent, experimenting with creating “wonderland” spaces that bring an element of fun and lightheartedness back into our lives.

Alyssa Rosenheck: Tell me about yourself.

Lee Kleinhelter: I grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina, studied art history at the College of Charleston, and interior design at the Art Institute of Atlanta. After school, I began working under some of Atlanta’s best interior designers. I first opened Pieces in 2004 as a brick-and-mortar, then launching our e-commerce and interiors website which continues to be a resource for customers and interior designers all over the country. Pieces has since grown to be a full-service interior firm, giving us the opportunity to work on amazing projects from Atlanta to New York. My husband, Kevin Kleinhelter, is the owner of K2 Construction - his office is located right under Pieces! I have an active 8-year-old son, Holden, and a 19-year-old stepdaughter, Madison. Our newest addition is Hux - an English cream golden retriever who (by far) gets more attention than anything in the store!

AR: The shop is filled with visual inspiration from room to room .. how has the shop contributed to the modernization or updated Southern Style?

LK: We're very proud Pieces has had a brick-and-mortar storefront since 2004. The store provides us a place to express our style and interior design background, while allowing us to share this design and provide inspiration to everyone. It is extremely important to us that the store feels like nothing you've seen before. Maybe you've seen a piece here and there we have, but not done in our way. We have always been known for an ‘unexpected chic’ look. In our eyes, being in the South does not mean your style has to be typical Southern.

AR: What innovative trends are you seeing with Southern style across the country?

LK: We don’t follow any trends; however, we love seeing designers push the envelope to do something new or over the top, rather than just copy others’ designs. It's all about being authentic and doing something different.

AR: How have you mastered the growth of the shop and is there structure or tips you may share when you grow rapidly?

LK: Stay true with what your angle is on the market. Don't try to do it all or do what others are doing. It’s so refreshing when all stores look different, have different product, and support each other. You have to force yourself as a small business to reevaluate and restructure. Also, you’re only as good as those that help you. You can accomplish so much with a small efficient group, rather than growing too big and outsourcing. More and bigger aren't always better. Each month, we completely rearrange the store with a new theme to refresh the space and inspire customers with updated ways to use our pieces. Plus, it’s a design challenge for us to play with new ways to display! We play many different roles while accomplishing the distinct facets that make up our business daily. One day, we’re reevaluating the website, and the next, we’re receiving shipments, installing someone’s home, or working on an out-of-state photo shoot. It can be chaos, so we value efficiency and prioritization. Although it can be hectic, we're very thankful and appreciative of our amazing clients.

AR: What advice do you have for female entrepreneurs?

LK: Your experience and years of work should show your talent and back everything someone may question.

AR: What’s your life motto?

LK: Clean out the clutter both personally and professionally. Be efficient with your time.  Make everything purposeful. Sometimes that’s easier said than done.

AR: What’s your favorite housewarming gift?

LK: Our lucite frames are the perfect gift and our customers' favorite go-to!

AR: Tell us something we probably don’t know.

LK: We have chickens… silkies to be specific. My husband, the contractor, built a coop in the back yard that mimics the design of our house. Chickens are fun, easy pets, and the free organic eggs are always a plus! So now, I'm the crazy lady that talks about chickens any chance I can get!

The New Southern | Beauty Tips, Part II: MAKEUP

November 02, 2017 in The New Southern, Nashville TN, Neutral Color Palette, Styling, AR Beauty, AR Beauty Tips, AR Interviews, TNS Round Up

Recently, I shared with you that my favorite accessory is a healthy dose of humble confidence (HERE). Believing in yourself and what you stand for is a sure-fire way toward a happier outlook, a positive essence, and productive a workflow. In the most non-superficial way, I ultimately feel my best when I’m working hard, I’m taking care of my body and mind, and when I feel, well, put together.

We all get so busy and it’s easy to lose track of those priorities. But I often joke that caffeine, some positivity, and a lot of concealer get me through the day, and I know many of you are in the same boat! Because so many of you asked, I’m excited to share my tried and true beauty routine for a look that will last and let my focus be on the task at hand while tackling a full and rewarding day... from meetings, to cross-continent flights, to 15-hour shoots and throwing in the occasional speaking engagement.... this is a clean look that will be the constant through all of our shifts and turns... and I am happy to share one of my constants with you!

I’ve partnered with the the oh-so-talented Hayley Mitchell, the Austin-based artist known for her graphic, punchy portraits, to help illustrate my step-by-step beauty routine. I hope you’ll check out her work and give her a follow; her aesthetic and creative drive so represents The New Southern, and I’m so fortunate to have connected with her on this journey. I also hope you’ll give my tricks a try and share the look with me on Instagram! I can't wait to hear your thoughts and please feel free to comment below. Sending you all LOVE this week. Xx

MOISTURIZER

To prep, I apply NeoStrata Bionic Face Cream 12 Bionic PHA everywhere except my eyes. A little goes a long way, and a tiny dollop provides complete coverage, so it’s good to be conservative.

TINTED MOISTURIZER + SPF

Next I use Revisions Intellishade Original tinted moisturizer SPF 45, again all over my face with the exception of my eyes. I love this product because it gives me a subtle dewy look with some coverage, but be careful, as applying too much will make you look pretty greasy.

CONCEALER

Using a damp Beauty Blender, I apply Mac’s Studio Finish Concealer in NW 20 SPF 35 very liberally under my eyes. Genetically I have dark undereye circles, and this concealer is the absolute best for all-day wear, especially on shoot days when I’m constantly moving between inside and the outdoors and then off to client dinners when I wrap on set.

SETTING POWDER

I then take a small brush to Laura Mercier’s Translucent Loose Setting Powder in Natural Finish and conservatively set the concealer underneath my eyes. You can also use it to set the tinted Revisions Intellishade moisturizer around your nose, as necessary. I recently discovered the major benefits of setting powder. I’m all about a quick morning makeup routine, and although it adds an extra step, this stuff ensures the look stays all day long. It saves me so much time at the end of the day if I’m finishing up a shoot and going straight into a dinner meeting or to an event.

POWDER

To even everything out, I apply Bobbi Brown’s Skin Weightless Powder Foundation in Warm Ivory 1 with a large brush. Because I don’t wear foundation, this is a perfect weightless alternative to give my face a smooth texture and healthy glow. Throughout the day, I’ll reapply this to touch up or eliminate shininess between meetings.

BRONZER + BLUSH

I have a little confession--I have never taken the time to learn to contour! Instead, I have a go-to bronzer and blush, which I sometimes wear separately and other times, together. You must try NARS Laguna and Bare Minerals Sunkissed, which I apply liberally with a blush brush under my cheekbones, on the bridge of my nose, on my forehead, and sometimes in the crease of my eyes. Naturally I’m very fair (like a translucent baby fish that you can see their heart beating), so both of these shades offer a subtle, not-too-pink glow without having to sit there and chisel my face with 6 different contouring shades. When you’re a busy gal like me, you have to color outside the lines when you contour!

EYESHADOW

I usually choose to wear a single eyeshadow shade to avoid all the time and precision a heavy-duty look requires. My all time favorite shadow is Urban Decay’s Toasted, which is perfect to transition from day to night. I apply my eyeshadow conservatively in the crease of my eye and leave my eyelid pretty bare.

EYELINER

Because my complexion is so fair, I had trouble finding an eyeliner that wasn’t too harsh for a long time. That is, until recently when I discovered NARS Larger Than Life Long Wear Eyeliner in “Via De’Martelli.” I use just a touch, only applying on the outer top corner of my lid.

MASCARA

I swear by Benefit’s They’re Real mascara—it’s one of the best mascaras I’ve ever used and I wear this daily. Apply two coats pretty liberally in order to fully coat your lashes and achieve maximum volume. But beware, at the end of the day, gently and very patiently remove it from your lashes with warm water and face soap. If you’re in a hurry, you may miss a few lashes and wake up with mascara….everywhere.

LIPS

Figuratively and literally, I like to keep my lip color pretty simple and light. These days, I’ve reached for NARS Turkish Delight Lip gloss, which has great lasting coverage and is both conditioning and moisturizing. If I want a little bit more definition, I’ll apply MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Cultured and top it off with a dab of Mac Lustre Lipstick in Pretty Please.

The New Southern | Beauty Tips, Part I: INNER BEAUTY

October 30, 2017 in The New Southern, Nashville TN, Neutral Color Palette, Styling, AR Beauty, AR Beauty Tips, AR Interviews
Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Beauty Tips_Inner Beauty_Detox_Self Love_Health_Wellness_Alyssa_Rosenheck

For a while now, many of you have asked me daily about my beauty and make-up routine. I’m excited to finally share all of those tips with you HERE. But before I get into my makeup bag, I want to talk about another kind of makeup.

All of you, every single one, have your own individual makeup. Who you are and who you’re growing to become is completely unique, and you have a very special gift to offer this world. For me, it took having cancer and breaking free of the corporate grind to fully understand and embrace my creativity. I’ve realized that it’s my special gift, and I must harness it in order to spread light and love through my photography collaborations and through The New Southern. As I learned (and continue to learn!) how to use my gift for good, I’ve begun to love myself and others more and more.

Through this amazing, interconnected web of conversations that we call social media, I’ve personally connected with so many of you. Your story and your own special makeup pushes me to work harder and share beautiful things with you every day. But without fully knowing and loving myself, I wouldn’t be able to open up, be vulnerable, and above all, be completely authentic with you. Connecting to my inner beauty and wellbeing has allowed me to reach a higher potential than I could’ve imagined. Here, find a few of my tips for completely knowing and loving yourself. It makes all the difference. Promise.

ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE PRESENT…

The most powerful tool in life is being completely present in the current moment. Over the years, I’ve learned to let go of the past with love and appreciation, and to not worry so much about what lies ahead. Truly embrace what’s right in front of you, set aside time for stillness..... and it is within these moments connection to the world around you happens and ultimate self care. The power is in the present.... great connection with your work, family and opportunity can result when you choose to focus on the current moment. Right now,  I hope my words are touching your heart and set the tone for the rest of your day.

Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Beauty Tips_Inner Beauty_Detox_Self Love_Health_Wellness_Alyssa_Rosenheck

Allow yourself self-love…

Be kind to yourself. Throughout the day, it is so important to be aware of the inner dialogue you have with yourself. It’s crucial that your personal thoughts come from a place of kindness and grace rather than judgement. We all are doing the best we can—try not to beat yourself up about every minute detail. There is beauty in the smallest of completed tasks. When you complete them, give yourself a pat on the back, or look into the mirror and tell yourself how special you are. Self-love comes in many forms.... Being kind to yourself, selecting healthy foods to feed your body, hydrating, cultivating time for play and creativity throughout the day (even if it is just 5 minutes), and the one I believe in most.. is getting enough sleep. These small supporting actions are the simplest forms of self love. They work for me and I hope they work for you.

Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Beauty Tips_Inner Beauty_Detox_Self Love_Health_Wellness_Alyssa_Rosenheck

And always keep humble confidence….

I remember on my last podcast interview, the very first question the show host asked was “What’s your favorite fashion accessory?” To be honest, I was a little peeved, considering the question was unrelated to my field or passion, and I don’t ever want to be someone defined by my favorite handbag or a pair of heels. Calmly, and with grace, I responded that my favorite accessory is confidence. And more and more, I’m realizing that humble confidence is truly key in my world right now.

So often, I’m really scared. You may not believe me, but I am. My businesses are rapidly growing, and I now have to be more decisive and forward-thinking than ever. I make tough decisions every day. But because I face this decision-filled time with self-confidence in myself and my work, I know that whatever the outcome is, I’ve got this. Having this faith deep down inside, and constantly reminding myself that I’ve survived life thus far, the corporate world, and cancer, I can safely say I can take on anything. To each of you, especially the mothers out there, who are thriving at the most difficult job in the world, I commend you. And I encourage you to exercise this self-assurance. Even when you stumble, it’ll help you pick right back up where you left off.
