Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Entrepreneur Spotlight with Maggie Callahan, Maggie Louise Confections, Chocolatier, Austin, TX

The New Southern | Entrepreneur Spotlight: Maggie Callahan, Owner of Maggie Louise Confections

April 07, 2019 in The New Southern, TNS Spotlight

Austin-based confectionary connoisseur, Maggie Callahan, is redefining the world of chocolate in New Southern style. After spending years as a lawyer she made the transition (we love a good life pivot) to follow her passion for something more creative — reimagining the nostalgic box of chocolates and bringing a fun, fresh personality to an everyday indulgence. She has since satisfied her craving, attracting locals and sweet-tooths to her 6th Street Maggie Louise Confections flagship and studio which is known for its Parisian-atelier design and dreamy, handcrafted candies.

Recognized for her chocolatey innovation, with features in platforms like Vogue, Domino, Southern Living and Good Morning America, Maggie’s chocolates are always on-trend. From classics and gift sets for every occasion to completely customized sentiments. Everything she puts out is seasonally designed with nods to the worlds of fashion and entertainment. Her impeccable service and attention to detail has allowed her to tap into creating an unparalleled and memorable experience for her customers. All about gourmet taste and bespoke details — her tasty work is shaping the future of the traditional love note, thank you card, and any occasion around the corner (hello Easter and Mother’s Day)!

This sweet soul and entrepreneur is paving the way for creativity in the world of confection and staying true to her all-authentic self in the process. Leaning into her light and working toward her own hope of filling the world with more kindness and imagination, she embodies The New Southern spirit! I am so excited to feature her on the blog and can’t wait for all of you to read what she has to share! …… and trust me when I tell you her chocolates are just as delicious as they are beautiful (I have done my due diligence Xx)

Alyssa Rosenheck: What does The New Southern mean to you?

Maggie Callahan: It means kindness and connection — being inspired by the past but creating for the future.

AR: What innovative trends are you seeing with The NEW Southern movement across the country?

MC: Across the country, there is a trend towards experiences. People are finding joy in gifting others. The best leaders and creative entrepreneurs are known to be selfless and service oriented.

AR: In what ways are you giving to your customer and or your community?

MC: Client service is a key tenant of our business and this includes supporting the communities in which our clients and our team live. We have given to over 60 charitable organizations this year alone. It is wonderful to give back and support those around us.

AR: What are some lessons or pivots you have learned from and what advice do you have for others getting started in the creative field?

MC: I practiced law for nearly a decade before taking a leap to pursue a passion for food and entertaining. I had a successful career but I wasn’t happy and my creative side hustle was not getting the attention it deserved. I made the leap for myself and for my family. I wanted to love my career and come home energized at the end of the day. My past in the corporate world has been a true asset in my creative endeavors. If you don’t have this experience, lean on friends and family that do. Seek advice from everyone and read as much as possible.

AR: What is your morning routine? What life hacks make you more productive?

MC: I have a 2 year-old and a 7 year-old. So, mornings are less about my routine and more about theirs! A few lifehacks: reduce daily decision-making by limiting your options when it comes to things you don’t care about. For example, eat the same lunch everyday and you never have to spend time deciding what to have for lunch. Also, outsource what you can!

AR: How are you living your best life right now?

MC: The work that I do now with Maggie Louise Confections is truly my authentic self. I get to be me, each and every day, which is my best life.

AR: What’s your life motto?

MC: If something scares you, feel the fear and do it anyway.

AR: How do you continue to differentiate yourself in the marketplace?

MC: Innovative design, impeccable client service and a focus on the future.

AR: The one shade that changes everything? Tell us what mood it evokes and when/how you’ve used it.

MC: Pink — it is pretty, happy and always optimistic.

AR: The place you go to get inspired?

MC: My library at home, filled with piles of books and photos.

AR: The key to making a house a home? What does a home need more of and less of?

MC: Home is a place to be surrounded by the people and the things that you love. My own home is full of treasures that I have collected along the way — artwork, colorful glassware, unusual objects. Plus, a loving husband and two adorable kids. A home needs laughter, cozy furniture, holiday decor, a pantry full of supplies for last minute meals and outsourced help for cleaning! A home needs fewer worries and stress. So what if it isn’t perfect?

Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Entrepreneur Spotlight with Maggie Callahan, Maggie Louise Confections, Chocolatier, Austin, TX

AR: Life advice you’ve gotten that made all the difference both personally and professionally?

MC: Do the work. When faced with big tasks, break them down into small pieces and grind them out.

AR: Who are some of your favorite artists/makers? What do you love about their work?

MC: My mother! Julia Zollman Wickes, an abstract artist. I grew up in a home filled with artist tools and it had a significant impact on me.

AR: What’s your favorite housewarming gift?

MC: A box of chocolates, of course :)

AR: The Best Business book you’ll always have on your shelf?

MC: Shoe Dog by Phil Knight.

AR: What’s currently on your nightstand?

MC: Waterloo sparkling water and 10 to 12 half-read books.

AR: The greatest color combination that ever existed?

MC: Black and White Stripes.

AR: What’s a new spin on an old Southern tradition?

MC: Introducing color and whimsy to a tradition of sharing sweets with loved ones.

AR: The world needs more _______.

MC: Kindness and imagination.

AR: I am grateful for _______.

MC: The support of those around me.

Naturalizer "Today We Will" Campaign with Alyssa Rosenheck

March 30, 2019 in AR Interviews, AR SPEAKING EVENTS, AR Press Feature, AR Business

What inspires you? Ask yourself this question…. it is a big question. I like to remove its gravity and reduce it to daily tangible light. In this moment… with your current view… what inspires you? For me, right now as I am writing this … I am inspired by the collective view of electric hot pink post-it notes all over my office… especially one that reads “Divine Timing” … envision about 50 of these on my wall. I am inspired by the warmth and comfort my tea is giving me right now after a really long day… its steam is like a gentle nudge for me to keep going this evening and is holding my hand while I create. I am also inspired by a daily promise to myself especially after a long week to continue choose love over fear both personally and professionally. I am proud to announce a partnership with Naturalizer. I am humbled to be selected as a “pioneering voice” and “successful disruptor” to launch their 2019 Spring Campaign. I chose love when I said yes to this and no to my fears throughout this process. If you think about coming from a place of love…. every day… you can help change the world. I believe when we step into our truth… OUR LIGHT…. and we are making decisions from our most authentic place… this creates a ripple effect and inspires others to do the same….. it inspires others to make decisions from a place of love, inspires others to be kind, and inspires others to be of deep service. I have a commitment to myself and to you… I commit to using my craft, my voice and my art to better the world around me. I am honored to partner with Naturalizer and stand alongside four other women in the country who have a very similar vision. Click on the video above or head to my interview with Naturalizer below to read more about the campaign and my inspirations. I love you all and I am proud of this community we are actively creating together. Xx #TodayWeWill #LiveInOurLight #TheNewSouthern

What does living in your own light mean?

This is one of my favorite sayings. As an interiors and architectural photographer, I let the light in each space guide me from room to room…I throw out all previous plans, allowing myself to become present and connected to the space before I start shooting. This is a meditative state for me. Over time, and especially after having cancer, I recognized that we all have light within us. When we become present, still and connected to ourselves, pursuing our truth, our own inner light will guide us. This for me is living in my light. Living in my light means that I am living from my most authentic core with great love, a sense of service and a deep spirit fueling my dreams. When I am doing this, I am inspiring others to do the same…live in the light.

Tips to help other women do the same….

  1. Take stock in how you are making daily decisions. Ask yourself, am I making this decision out of love or fear? Please choose love.

  2. Follow the light. What in your day energizes you? What brings you joy? What are you grateful for? Identify this, take stock in this and do more of this…

  3. Make your fear work for you. Write down one thing you are afraid of doing this month and do just that. The things we need to do most in life are often the things that terrify us. I use fear as a litmus test of growth and the direction I need to pursue. I have learned as a creative entrepreneur that the magic, the vulnerability and the growth all lie within the discomfort of embracing our personal fears. The fear never goes away, but by moving through it you will encounter tremendous growth and continue to live in your own light.

MY STYLE MANTRA AND THE PHILOSOPHY BEHIND WHAT I WEAR…

My philosophy behind the things I wear is to keep it simple, classic and I am not afraid to repeat it. The greatest gift you can give yourself each day is time…. a little extra time to focus on self-love, time to focus on family, time to pursue your passion, and a little extra time to listen and be kinder to our neighbors. I spend less time on trends, less time on figuring out what to wear with more time focusing on the substance and love I wan to add to the day. This is done by incorporating a great pair of jeans, a classic button up and a few key pieces I use as year round staples.

Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Artist Spotlight with Laurie Winthers of Pajaro Dunes, CA

The New Southern | Artist Spotlight: Laurie Winthers

March 11, 2019 in The New Southern, TNS Spotlight

Dreaming big is the first step… feeling all the fear attached to the possibilities is the next while seeing how these inner compulsions can help change the world around us is the ultimate goal. Small forward moving steps in the direction of your heart pulls.. those goose bump moments is how we manifest these possibilities for ourselves… our dreams. Laurie Winthers, contemporary painter, ukulele player and haiku writer, knows best how to heed to these inner callings. With the belief that something will keep calling in different ways until you answer, she trusts that it is never too late to give something new a try! By sticking to what she loves most, she has remained true to her own vision — both for her life and her artistic work.

For Laurie, painting is the intuitive act that brings her home to her voice. Inspired by the sea and her family, drawn to California’s landscapes and feeling gratitude for each new day are all a part of her process. Represented by The Nancy Dodds Gallery in Carmel, California and at Serena and Lily, her visual and emotional work features bold color palettes and a playful use of space that so beautifully captures the light. These vibrant land and seascapes instill a deep sense of calm and joy that is both meditative and representative of Laurie as a creative.

The New Southern is a movement rooted in kindness and love, expanding as a guide to help connect you to your own truth. Laurie embodies this in every way...with her own take on the New Southern being all about embracing life. We are so fortunate to have this artist in our community and I am so excited for you all to get to know her a bit better! Xx

Alyssa Rosenheck: Tell us about yourself.

Laurie Winthers: I am a contemporary painter, living and working by the sea, on the Monterey Bay, in California. I was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area with great parents, grandparents, goofy brothers and tons of aunts, uncles and cousins nearby.  I’ve had a fulfilling career in Child Development, stayed at home to help raise two beautiful children and am now experiencing the joy, along with my sweet husband, of having three tiny grandchildren. I started my art career when I turned 40 and it is the one thing that I have done on my own terms, that is all me. I paint what I love, which are the surrounding fields and ocean — always remaining true to my vision. I paint from memory and love the freedom that it gives me to create what I want. I hope this instils a feeling of peace and joy in anyone who views my work. I feel that throughout life’s requisite ups and downs, I am a very fortunate woman...surrounded by loving and supportive family, friends and work that I love.

AR: What does The New Southern mean to you?

LW: To me, first and foremost, The New Southern means embracing life — adopting a kindness towards others and supporting all different kinds of people. It means creating a home that is casual and family friendly, and creating an open and happy environment, both visually and emotionally. You are championing a movement of love and kindness!

AR: What innovative trends are you seeing with The New Southern movement across the country?

LW: I am seeing people use personal and meaningful collections in their homes. Whether it’s contemporary, fresh, bright art, unique family photos, found objects from nature, beloved books, handmade items from friends or things collected from travels...Each home is unique, interesting, and speaks volumes about its owner.

AR: What is your most important tool as an artist and is there something you can’t live without in your studio?

LW: Honestly, the best thing I have in my studio is a safe space with the freedom to create whatever I want! My studio overlooks a lagoon filled with ducks, egrets and Blue Heron. Water is the thing that I can’t live without. Lots of water. My brushes need to be super clean to paint the way that I want to. I can’t paint outdoors because I can never carry enough water!!!!

AR: What are some lessons or pivots you have learned from? What advice do you have for others getting started in the creative field?

LW: Even though I enjoyed working with children and parents in my Child Development career, I found that if something else keeps calling you, heed the call! I think it keeps calling in different ways until you answer. It’s never too late to try something new! That is my pivot advice. My best advice for new creatives, which was given to me early on in my art career by Darling Neath, is to stay true to your own vision. Don’t let others sway the way you work, or what you work on. That is especially hard when working with your first gallery, as we all aim to please. And, as always, be positive and work hard at what you love.

AR: What is your morning routine?

LW: I wake up every morning and sit on the side of my bed for a morning meditation, thanking my body for doing its best, feeling gratitude for rest and for a new day, and feeling thankful for my loving, supportive family and friends. This is followed by 15 minutes of Qigong. Then I hug my husband, and make our morning tea. My healthy breakfast hack is to add kale, protein powder and blueberries to my daily “Daily Harvest” smoothie.  I drink this almost every morning and feel like I am starting the day on a healthy and positive note.

AR: How are you living your best life right now?

LW: I feel that at this stage in my life, I am trying to enjoy EVERYTHING as much as I can. I love being in my studio, creating, and try to get there as often as possible, all while balancing taking care of myself, spending time with and caring for family and friends, and trying to have fun! I try daily to be a caring, loving and kind human being.

AR: The place you go to get inspired?

LW: Currently, the place that most inspires me is being on my deck overlooking the ocean with my 3 year old granddaughter, Lucy.  She reminds me to be free with my art, not judge what I’m making and do what makes me happy...and also to laugh and be joyful while doing it!

AR: My momma always said…

LW: My momma (and poppa) always said, “Look for the best in people and situations. You can almost always find something good.  And, if you can’t, then those people or situations weren’t meant for you.” I’ve found this to be true…most people are good and kind, given half a chance. And from my mom, aged 93, who has the most beautiful smile ever, “Keep going and keep smiling!”

AR: What’s your favorite housewarming gift?

LW: My favorite housewarming gift is handmade soap from a woman in La Selva Beach, California.  She makes beautiful, seasonal, pastel-colored soaps from vintage molds and wraps them in a clear sleeve — tied with vintage ribbon. I find them at Patine, a small shop in Santa Cruz.

AR: Tell us something we probably don’t know.

LW: Something that most people don’t know about me is that I am learning to play a beautiful, blue Ukulele, given to me on my last birthday by my husband. Also, instead of journaling, I write Haiku poems to reflect what is going on in my life at any given moment. This one expresses how I feel when working on my Ocean Memories paintings:

“Water becomes paint
Ocean gently rolling in
Paint becomes water”

Allure Magazine Feature with Karen Elson Xx

February 18, 2019 in The New Southern, AR Photography, AR Home Tour, Allure Magazine, AR Press Feature

The New Southern is dedicated to passionate humans who embrace their truth and use it as a platform to better communities and the world around them. I am committed to shining a light on these creative entrepreneurs, their processes, along with the four walls containing this synergistic infectious energy. Our stories are our power and every day is a new opportunity to use our truth to better the world around us.

Shooting for Allure magazine and working with their editorial staff is a definitely a highlight…. especially when they call me to contribute to an intimate bathroom series (Check out my last one here with Jen Auerbach). I am thrilled to share with you one of fashion’s icons, social activists, and singer songwriter, Karen Elson.

Bathrooms represent a fresh start or a therapeutic evening ritual… this is a place for stillness, pause…. a place for reconnection. Such intimate spaces share the inner-workings of a person's life and mentality. Are the countertops decorative? functional? barren? When I walked in Karen’s space there was a soulful and intentional story being told. I immediately connected to the saturation, the depth, the dotted gold details. This is collected at it’s finest and a whimsical reprieve. The design of this space is from the talented duo Pierce and Ward.

Thank you so much to Allure and Karen for welcoming me into this beautiful space! Make sure to grab a copy of Allure’s latest issue on stands NOW and have a look at the entire feature below! Xx
