Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Artist Spotlight with Catherine Erb, Fine-Art Photographer of Memphis, TN

The New Southern | Artist Spotlight: Catherine Erb

November 27, 2017 in The New Southern, TNS Spotlight

We find peace and stillness in the clouds, this is where we dream and this is where we take flight... and it was within her cloud series I was originally introduced to the talented mixed media fine-art photographer Catherine Erb, who seeks beauty, inspiration, and identity in changing perspectives, shifting landscapes, flashes of moments in time that allow her and her work’s admirers to break away from it all. Every piece of Catherine’s art illustrates a moment of reflection, creating a sense of hope and self-discovery, while capturing the essence of being present in the moment - a gentle reminder in the midst of our busy lives.

“There is a little break in time that occurs after something comes into my viewfinder. But before I have had a chance to react or form a judgment, there is clarity in that interval of time—I try to shoot and capture that moment. When it works, the result is not just an image, but a feeling and reminder that the magic always happens in the present.”

While I was shooting for Sean Anderson, I was first introduced to Catherine’s work and immediately felt a deep, soulful connection to her “Cloud Studies” series. Connecting with her through social media—a beautiful benefit of our new digital economy—led Catherine to invite me to speak alongside her on a panel for David Lusk Gallery, where her work is featured. At the panel, her words and our conversation only enriched her talent, further captivating and connecting me to her touching, passionate spirit—an encounter, which I believe, was incredibly intentional. Not only have I been so proud to champion Sean Anderson, it makes my heart even more full to champion this strong, soulful woman with a clear artistic eye for mixed media.

Just as alluring as the swirling, mystifying colors of her mixed media “Cloud Studies” series and as exquisite as the coastal seashores of “Near Water,” Catherine’s spirit radiates The New Southern’s meaning to define a shift in Southern style—one where exploration anchors a space, allowing us to push beyond boundaries, examining our environments and connectedness through a lens we may have first been fearful to pick up.

With her “Cloud Studies” artwork featured in my photographs for Architectural Digest and Elle Decor, the Memphis native leaves me artfully moved to embrace new angles, allowing more traditionally Southern spaces breathe in fresh, modern air.

I’ll let Catherine dive into the details on what The New Southern means to her.

Alyssa Rosenheck: Tell me about yourself.

Catherine Erb: I am a self-taught fine-art photographer and mixed media artist from Memphis who became fascinated with photography in the late 80’s while attending boarding school. After high school, I moved to Europe and worked with photographers for several years before returning to Memphis to start a family, resulting in two beautiful girls (both now in college). Initially, the camera was a way to visually journal and document day-to-day experiences. Now, this practice and mixed media work have become more of a meditation and documented exploration. My work is inspired by relationships and I am fascinated by how we relate to one another and the world around us. In particular, our relationship to divinity, spirit, and the things we cannot see. The series are explorations and studies searching for a glimpse of the invisible. Everything and everyone has a divine essence and I seek to capture it.

AR: How are you modernizing / updating Southern style when you design?

CE: The South’s past, people, unique environment and lifestyle largely influence my work. I try to make my art feel like the things that influence the work. Art has a way of tapping into our collective consciousness and connecting us on levels we aren’t fully aware of. I think a lot of that is happening with Southern style right now. The clouds are large-scale contemporary pieces and I love how they can update more traditional settings and mix with old. I love that the The New Southern is recognizing and sharing this collective phenomena.

AR: What innovative trends are you seeing with Southern style across the country?

CE: We live in Santa Barbara, California in the summers and a few years ago, I began to notice the fabulous fusion of Southern elements merging into California homes and shops. Each year I return, I’m left inspired by the way style and design transcend geography and connects us all.

AR: What are your favorite hometown design boutiques?

CE: Memphis has too many fabulous creative spaces and designers to name. I am blessed to have worked closely with many talented local designers and am constantly blown away by how Memphis seems to breed talented, creative souls. Two virtual boutiques I frequent are One Kings Lane and 1stdibs.

AR: Favorite shade of white and black paint color?

CE: “Gesso” by Golden is my favorite white. I have actually used it on walls in my home as well as my artwork. When you use “Gesso” on a wall you get the freshest white with a finish that is absolutely unique. For black paint color, I love Benjamin Moore “Black.”

AR: What’s your life motto?

CE: Love.

AR: The one shade that changes everything? Tell us what mood it evokes and when/how you’ve used it.

CE: Kindness: evokes joy—used as often as possible to spread my life’s motto.

AR: The place you go to get inspired?

CE: I am in a constant state of being inspired. I find inspiration in most things, but I particularly love looking up! Looking up helps remind me to keep my thoughts and intentions high. I’m also inspired by collections of things that contain spirit. Collecting is a favorite Southern past-time, and generations have perfected the art. I am so moved by the things that were collected by past generations; those collections influence us. I like objects that hold spirit and make us go ... (fast breath in) Southern style is becoming more fresh and approachable, but I guarantee there is a little alter of collected love in every Southern-influenced home.

AR: The key to making a house a home? What does a home need more of and less of?

CE: Family, love, and laughter are the real secrets to making a house a home but an art collection, fresh flowers, and lots of books sure do help.

AR: Life advice you’ve gotten that made all the difference both personally and professionally?

CE: These two quotes have had a profound influence on my life. “Be the change you want to see in the world,” said by Gandhi, and “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change,” said by Wayne Dyer. As photographers, we are constantly looking for ways to see things from a different perspective. We can literally make objects and environments change by looking at them through a different lens. This is an area where my art has taught me, because life is the same way; as soon as we choose to change the way we see something, it changes.

AR: Design advice you’ve received that made all the difference?

CE: Less is more. Know when to stop. Use restraint.

AR: What’s the best piece of business advice you could provide for creative entrepreneurs starting out?

CE: It’s another Gandhi quote, but he said it better that I ever could. A person following this advice would have a hard time being anything but successful.

"Keep your thoughts positive, because your thoughts become your words.
Keep your words positive, because your words become your behaviors.
Keep your behaviors positive, because your behaviors become your habits.
Keep your habits positive, because your habits become your values.
Keep your values positive, because your values become your destiny."

AR: Design book you’ll always have on your shelf?

CE: Parish-Hadley: Fifty Years of American Decorating by Sister Parish, Albert Hadley, and Christopher Petkanas. It's important to study the designers who blazed the trail for all the young talented creatives we enjoy today. This book is like an encyclopedia of design.

AR: Who are some of your favorite artists/makers? What do you love about their work?

CE: I have too many favorites to name but here are a few artists whose work I collect who also compliment The New Southern. Jack Spencer, Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, Jared Small, Lance Letscher, Kate Breakey, and Richard Serra. What I love about each of these artists is the way their art makes me feel. Art awakens all of my senses and I particularly love the relationship we have with art that we collect. My relationships to the works I own are as special, intimate, and unique as my relationship to the work I create.

AR: What does “The New Southern” mean to you?

CE: To me, The New Southern is like comfort food for the eyes and senses. It’s cozy and warm, welcoming, and hospitable. It looks like kindness makes you feel and transcends trends.

Corporate, Cancer, and Creative: My Latest Conversation with Refinery29

November 25, 2017 in AR Interviews, AR Travel Tips, AR Beauty, The New Southern, AR Business

Recently, I had a moment to catch up with the editors at Refinery29. I am passionate in sharing how I chose to forego the corporate life in exchange for the cross country creative journey I am on... I continue to share my story with the genuine intention of inspiring you to infuse a little more curiosity and creativity in your day to day. When you lean into your creativity, you lean into your light… and when you lean into your light, you start to discover your purpose. Cancer was my catalyst… What is yours?

Following my diagnosis, I decided to do away with long hours in cold operating rooms and heavy medical device spine sets to ultimately pick up a camera and lean into my creative spirit. Since then, my photography business and The New Southern were born. When I resigned from my job in spine device sales, three things happened: 1. A total Thyroidectomy 2. Purchased my first camera 3. Healing to result in living my most authentic life. Teaching myself my craft and the entire learning experience was catharthic; for over a decade in the corporate world, I had put my creativity in a box.... and honestly, I didn't even think of myself as creative. I was focused on surviving in a male dominated highly competitive world rather than being focused on doing something that I love. Now, I can’t imagine having a life without color and passion.

Daily, I'm blown away by how quickly The New Southern movement has become recognized and understood, and I believe its success, and my own for that matter, is based upon two reasons. First, I hustle hard. Although it's exhausting, my constant urge to build this community, travel across the nation, and create beautiful and meaningful content was the basis for my success. But second, as soon as I recognized that I had a community of like-minded and aesthetic-obsessed creatives building me up and supporting one another, a totally new and exciting path began to take shape.

It's so encouraging to be surrounded by this collective, forward-thinking group of designers, artisans, creatives, and entrepreneurs who have forged this community. Together, we're changing what it means to be a creative entrepreneur, our own ideas of beauty and self-acceptance.. We've done away with perfection, the heaviness of rules, and the strict adherence to the past. Our new form is imperfect. It's organic. It's bright and it is giving life to a deep exhale of collected and new. Through our life pivots, sentimental memories attached to objects we use with styling, and the stories our projects tell, we're making waves in contemporary design and culture. Follow along, you'll see!!!

I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue to share my journey with Refinery29... with each interview, I am more gaining more comfort in opening up and sharing more vulnerable moments from my past experiencing and how they have shaped my approach today. Sending you all Love and Light.

The New Southern | Coffee Table Styling Tips Plus 35 of the Best Coffee Table Books

November 20, 2017 in The New Southern, Styling, AR Interviews, TNS Round Up, Gift Guide, AR Styling

More than just a simple piece of furniture, a coffee table often acts as a highlight reel — The New Southern’s NEW version of the mantel. It is meant to tell a story, to be loved and lived in with visual consistency and appeal, rather than being topped with prized possessions that you don’t touch. It’s a spot to showcase new loves, old treasures, and sentimental ornaments… It’s also where we will go with family and friends to catch up, set down drinks, and relax. The charming vignette that we display gives us an opportunity to welcome guests not only into our homes but into our lives.

As the foundation to a space that is meant for gathering, I feel that it is essential to decorate with this in mind. Styling can be deeply personal and because of that I carry an intrinsic interest in focusing on what matters most to my client and their homeowner clients. While southern design is traditionally known for its rules and strict adherence to the past, The New Southern highlights creative differences within the south and all across the country. The top of a coffee table can be filled with a variety of visual elements that all work together as personal renderings. This is our chance to transform traditional concepts of design in our own fresh NEW way. There are no rules here and we can take a deep breath in and a big exhale out as we toss out all of the guidelines and start implementing personal moments and what I like to call "proof of life".

My secret sauce to a flawless coffee table is in every piece of the jigsaw puzzle. It is the whole and all of its parts. There are no bounds in The New Southern’s world of design and coffee tables truly capture this message. Whether it may be my own home or that of a client’s, here are my coffee table must-haves! Xx

THE ANCHOR

This is the focal point of the table and something that I cannot do without. I suggest choosing your anchor based on ceiling height and the shape of your table. You can go with a low anchor that has a lot of surface area or a high one with a bit less. Think short hydrangeas in a short bowl or a tall vase with airy branches! In the above image, I used a low profile bowl with a lip to support casual layered tulips.

LONG, LINEAR & ROUND

If you want that jigsaw puzzle to come together you’re going to need to play around with pieces of all shapes and sizes in order for them to fit. Get creative and add some dimension. Staying true to The New Southern, I always seek to mix the old with the new. Maybe consider a super contemporary bowl alongside a more boxy, vintage find.

PROOF OF LIFE

This can be anything from an open book, a necklace, or sentimental piece. Lately, I have been loving layering with large wooden necklaces and mixing family heirlooms like an antique tray or modern bowl. Styling with an open book is one tip in particular that truly speaks to me. Choose a page that holds meaning or showcases a sentiment of value for you. It’s a soulful moment that will give those entering your home a glimpse into who you are.

TEXTURE FOR VISUAL INTEREST

Incorporating personal elements and pulling organic moments are key when it comes to styling coffee tables. I love greenery of all kinds! Pears and fruits are a fun way to add texture and are especially great during the holiday season.

MyDomaine Shares My Favorite Travel Tips for Efficiency and Productivity!

November 14, 2017 in AR Travel Tips, MyDomaine, AR Interviews, AR Press Feature, Gift Guide, AR Business

This month marks my 4-year anniversary as a photographer and stylist. My business anniversary symbolizes a dream come true, lots of hard work, and many frequent flyer miles (Hello, Southwest!!). This journey as a photographer started out as a personal outlet and catharsis from the corporate world. I allowed myself to dream big from the beginning, and I said yes to the opportunities that scared me the most allowing me to travel all over the country.

My travels have given me the opportunity to broaden and diversify my work as I am shooting and styling homes of all genres from coast to coast. Quickly, I noticed an aesthetic trend taking place among my designer counterparts. It's a visible shift happening in design—we're moving away from the intangible and priceless to humbly embrace a new, open-minded, relaxed way to integrate personality, architecture, and style into the home. It is becoming a mindset, this common thread of traditional southern elements being reimagined in new and refreshing ways all over the country. It really hit me when I was in Portland, Oregon, standing in a home that embodied a warm southern comfort in a modern, fresh way. This discovery made me push harder and travel further to keep my finger on the pulse of this creative movement.

This movement is The New Southern and as it gains more mileage, so have I. I am averaging well over 100,000 miles annually, and the incredible talent I'm highlighting continues to fuel my energy and focus to give a voice to the creatives that foster a national design shift. Dreams are coming true as I am living out of my suitcase, and I've picked up a few tips and healthy habits to make sure I'm operating at full-speed and feeling my best no matter where my travels take me (Bonjour Paris, France 2018).

I love sharing the things that work for me with all of you. I am hoping my best practices for a smooth travel day and productive workflow on the road will help you. Today, I am dishing some of my favorite apps, email efficiencies, and yummy products (ALL TIME FAVORITE Le Labo Santall 33) with MyDomaine! Whether you're a frequent business traveler, a student, or a busy mom running a mile a minute, these little tips make all the difference.

Head over to MyDomaine to read on, and of course, share your comments with me, questions, and any good pearls we can all use in the comments! You all inspire me daily and I am so grateful for your continued support! Xx
