Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Shop Spotlight with Jacqueline Buckner & Elizabeth White, Owners of Twine & Twig of Charlotte, NC

The New Southern | Shop Spotlight: Jacqueline Buckner & Elizabeth White, Owners of Twine & Twig

July 30, 2018 in The New Southern, TNS Spotlight

My daily practice is one of great intention in "living in the Light" and spreading kindness. Which is why I couldn't agree more with Jacqueline Buckner and Elizabeth White that the world needs a little more heart and soul. This sister duo is the the yin and yang to Twine & Twig — a beautifully done and handmade Southern jewelry line made of organic and all natural pieces. The North Carolina natives work with the desire to keep Southern tradition alive through their fresh eyes and youthful spirit. The result is a down-to-earth, elegant, earthy line that feels as though it was made by family.

It’s no doubt that Elizabeth and Jacqueline give life to a coastal New Southern vibe with sandy feet, wave worn sea glass, and creative drives fueled by the energy of a deep blue sea. Using elements from the earth in their pieces and staying inspired through travel — it’s a collection of wearable art so deeply inspired by the world around us. Their Charlotte-based, sunlit studio is an old cotton mill that emanates the indie mood of their line. A cozy, creative and productive space for their team to feel inspired. By focusing on surrounding themselves with those who lift them up and in doing the same for others they have established themselves as genuine as can be. Lovely makers — in both their artistic creation and membership within #TheNewSouthern creative community.

My passion is viewing the world around us as a place of connection and unity. A place where we can authentically show up and be supported regardless of our differences. This is the heart and soul behind why I started The New Southern and using our creative outlets is a powerful tool to connect and support one another. Jacqueline and Elizabeth are two creative women who openly stand by this — making them easy picks to champion as a part of the New Southern movement.

Alyssa Rosenheck: Tell us about yourselves….

Elizabeth White & Jacqueline Buckner: We are a sister duo that was born and raised in North Carolina. Almost 5 years ago we sat down at Figure 8 Island with some beads, natural objects collected from the beach and a lot of creative energy. Little did we know that summer would shape what is now our company, Twine & Twig which was just described by Garden & Gun Magazine as “one of the most successful Southern jewelry line launches in the last five years.” We spent our childhood in the mountains and the beach, which we would later realize the creative impact those regions had on us and the influence of Twine & Twig. Working with family is amazing, our work overflows into the weekend and we realize how lucky we are that our kids can run around, while our husbands grill and we brainstorm. But we do have 2 different personality types; one sister who is OCD + one who is ADD. That was a challenge in the beginning, figuring out how each other likes to work, but it has turned into a positive because we are a little yin and yang.

AR: Twine & Twig is filled with visual inspiration…How has the brand contributed to the modernization or updated Southern Style?

EW & JB: We both have always loved flipping through magazines to see outfits styled. While our followers enjoy our jewelry, we constantly hear from them that they also love to see how we style the jewelry with our clothes, creating different looks in styled outfits in various locations (lots of traveling on the T&T Instagram feed)

AR: What innovative trends are you seeing with The New Southern style across the country?

EW & JB: We are seeing trends with other companies also going back to making things in the US, by hand, with small companies that feel like family. Twine & Twig is a family owned and run company in every sense, which is our way to respect and keep the tradition going of Southern culture. Our kids are our inspiration and little helpers, our mom helps make bracelets, and our husbands take countless pictures. We are trying to slowly push the boundaries with new and innovative designs. We have customers all across the country that also seem to be drawn to the ease of our signature strap, our mix of natural materials and the relaxed elegance of Twine & Twig and how it can be worn with any outfit to create a laid back or dressy look.

AR: How have you mastered all the growth with Twine & Twig and is there structure or tips you may share when you grow rapidly?

EW & JB: We certainly have not mastered all of the growth, but we have tried to enjoy every minute of it learning a lot along the way. Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine creating a company of this size with so many amazing girls working for us and shipping our necklaces out to customers around the world. As far as tips go, don't be afraid to ask and learn from your mistakes. Surround yourself with people who lift you up. The creative community is amazing, everyone is so willing to share what has worked and what has not, so we make a point to do the same and answer any questions we can to those who are just starting out.

AR: What advice do you have for creative entrepreneurs?

EW & JB: You have to love what you do! If you LOVE what you are doing, all of the "blood, sweat & tears" along the way are worth it.

AR: The place you go to get inspired?

EW: The beach. There is something about the salt air that just restores your soul and feeds your creative drive. When we are designing a new collection we seek inspiration from TRAVEL. The new spring collection (SURF) has hues from the Sea of Thailand where we spent a few weeks last summer. This coming year we are heading back to Africa and I can't wait to see how that influences the Fall & Holiday collections.

AR: Who are some of your favorite artists/makers? What do you love about their work?

JB: Picasso. He never stopped evolving. His work looks so different at different stages of his life - it excites to me to think about the future and imagine how Twine & Twig will continue to change, evolve, morph and build on everything that came before it.

AR: What’s your advice for mixing old with new?

JB: I love to keep clothes...almost too much. But my criteria is — could my daughter wear this one day and it still be classic? In college one of my favorite things to do was to go to thrift stores and find real old rock t-shirts.  I'd mix that with a new pair of jeans and some broken in sneakers. I also love to mix high + low priced items.

AR: What’s your favorite housewarming gift?

EW & JB: Anything from our Found + Curated section paired with a little succulent or some fresh flowers. During our travels we often visit local markets and bring back items from artisans around the world. A fun conversation starter and a perfect way to add a little global flair to a new house. We also have a great selection of kitchen accessories, pillows + blankets and bar items so it makes it easy to gift!

AR: Tell us something we probably don’t know.

JB: I have a birthmark in the shape of a star.

AR: The greatest color combination that ever existed?

EW: Grays, Mushrooms & Taupes. Anything in the Earth family makes us happy!

AR: The world needs more ______.

JR:  KINDNESS! If everyone could just be a little kinder to each other then the world would be a better place. It is the number one quality I am trying to instill in my children.

EW: I believe in ORIGINALITY. Draw inspiration from everywhere, but do not copy. Your authenticity reveals your integrity.

A Portland Home (that doesn't feel too far from the South, after all!) with MyDomaine

July 27, 2018 in The New Southern, MyDomaine

Today I'm excited to share a new MyDomaine feature that I photographed and styled last year in Portland, OR. I ventured West to shoot this incredible project by Kaemingk Design, a husband-wife duo who began as house-flippers and have now cemented their place in the design and remodeling world of the Pacific Northwest. Their trademark aesthetic features bright neutrals, natural wood elements, and the occasional hint of industrial hardware. Needless to say, my camera and their spaces get along quite well.

When Brandt and Chelsea Kaemingk came to me to discuss the space and how it would photograph, I offered a few of my go-to styling tricks to really photo-finish out their space. I suggested draping the entire living area in a barely-there sand linen cotton blend to add visual interest and coziness to the white-walled space. You'd think wall-to-wall fabric would scream fussy, traditional, and don't-touch-anything, but with neutral panels draped from floor to ceiling, it creates a soft non-invasive layer adding an element of comfort to the walls like a good hug from a sweet new Southern friend (wink wink). One look at this shoot and you'll know that its laid-back, comfortable air integrates seamlessly into #TheNewSouthern. It's open, inviting, full of space but also a unique energy, and is the absolute perfect balance of newness and rustic charm.

Throughout the home, we incorporated (and suspended from the ceiling) original art on the walls for character, and I styled these great olive jars with branches and greenery to bring the lush Oregon outdoors into the space. Here and there, I created little moments to catch the eye—a sweet arrangement on the raw wood chair-turned nightstand in the bedroom, a collected moment of modern plates with vintage candle holders in the kitchen nook, and fresh blooms between the bathroom sinks.

It's projects like these that remind me just how far, literally, the aesthetic of The New Southern can reach.... and here I was in Portland, OR. These little vignettes, the warm neutrals, the light-filled space, the raw and unfinished woods...... it's all reflective of an inviting space, relaxed into the Southern influences that helped mold the Kaemingk's vision for this home....  I immediately connected to this home and when I first walked into the space, I intuitively knew the Kaemingk's had also experienced the thick summer air and creative magic brewing in the South of Charleston and Alys Beach (where they vacation) mixed in with their European inspirations. They confirmed this when they shared their long list of Southern architectural and design influences. I felt at home although I was 2,400 thousand miles away.

To see the entire Kaemingk project, visit MyDomaine! Xx

US WEEKLY Exclusive with Kaitlyn Bristowe podcast room with Decorist and Alyssa Rosenheck ©AlyssaRosenheck

US WEEKLY EXCLUSIVE: The Bachelorette’s Kaitlyn Bristowe Shares Her Pretty and Powerful Podcast Room with Decorist!

July 21, 2018 in AR Photography, Celebrity

Today I’m thrilled to share a recent shoot featured in US Weekly with The Bachelorette’s Kaitlyn Bristowe and Decorist, with which she collaborated to design her very own podcast room for her series, Off The Vine.

This shoot is my second with this dynamic GirlBoss, the first being a shoot with Kaitlyn to reveal her total home redesign, which you can see HERE in People.  The most recent  project was such a joy to work on, as Kaitlyn is a true light in this world and knows how to keep the atmosphere light, bright and filled with humor. You’ll also notice some major feminine vibes meet high-impact design moments, like supersized florals on a statement wall or the charming desk silhouette finished in sharp black lacquer and brass. Although she shares the home with Shawn (and their adorable pooch, Tucker!) I love that Jessica McCarthy with Decorist created a feminine but strong aesthetic for Kaitlyn's Off the Vine Podcast room in their home. I love being in a home and seeing the walls reflect the personality of its owner. The way the soft textures and feminine flowers are juxtaposed by a moody color palette and high gloss surfaces brought a few things to mind with this collaboration:

Seek to be bold, fearless, feminine, creative and authentic while also being soft, kind, gentle, giving..... all in equal amounts.... Xx

We are all in this together.... This room although is just a room... it is a conduit of joy and storytelling.... I look past the 4 walls and see this as a space of connection. As we are all starting our daily routines and looking at the clock, I encourage you all to take a few moments... and harness your inner and most authentic voice and pursue equal amounts of fearlessness today sprinkled with kindness and love. You inspire me everyday and I love being on this journey with you!! Sending you all love and light today!!

Thanks so much again to Kaitlyn, the team at US Weekly and Decorist for a beautiful and joy filled day. Click here to see the online feature! Xx

Alyssa Rosenheck The New Southern Healthy Travel Tips

Alyssa Rosenheck | Healthy Travel Tips

July 16, 2018 in AR Travel Tips, AR Interviews, AR Business

From Nashville to LA, Santa Barbara, Chicago and Austin — I have been hopping around time zones quite a bit these days (Hello #TheNewSouthern). Bouncing from city to city, photographing & styling beautiful spaces while collaborating with creative souls from all different corners of the country is both a joy and a blessing...but it also absorbs a lot of my physical and mental energy. Amidst my travels (over 100,000 miles a year!) I’ve managed to pick up a few personal tips which keep me going throughout my long work days and hours spent in the air. The life I’ve cultivated on the road has granted me with lots of tools for staying healthy and focused. Whether you’re packing for a short road trip or heading off on a cross-country flight — these are my go-to hacks for healthy (fulfilling) travel!! Xx

Hydration is key!

I drink plenty of water to balance tons of sky miles and I also have found great moisturizing creams for my lips and face. Every night and regardless of the season I use Epionce Medical Barrier Cream  for my face cream and Avene Cold Cream Lip Cream. These two items along with lots of water have been skin lifesavers for me!!

Get REST

I always have a bedtime when I am traveling!! I am nocturnal by nature and I get a second wind of creativity around 9 pm. So, when I am traveling I have to be mindful and get myself into bed no later than 10:30/11:00 pm if I want to be a fully functioning human when my early call time hits. When you have dinner meeting scheduled with clients, don't be afraid to set a phone alarm to be mindful and I always travel with a useful pair of earplugs (best $6 dollars I ever spent) for a guaranteed quiet night's sleep.

Limit the liquor…

There is truly nothing worse than traveling after a few too many drinks. I limit myself to a single glass of wine at dinner. I know that I am less effective and less creative when I am combating a headache so I avoid too much alcohol all together.

Direction vs. Schedule

All of my trips incorporate goals and direction. My goals are centered on connection and life giving moments. I connect with multiple clients in each city and when I travel I try to not have a regimented schedule. I like to be open to new dinners, new people and new inspiring moments to dictate the next decision. Having a regimented schedule prevents this and I always come from a place of yes when I am on the road — yes to new adventures, new places, and to feeling alive!

Work from anywhere

Airplanes are my office! I love to travel and embrace this uninterrupted time for myself. Sometimes I sit next to a fascinating neighbor and we become friends, but most often I am writing or editing while listening to something that is inspiring my soul. This sets the best tone for when I land. For more of the tools I use while traveling, head over to MyDomiane for my resources there. Xx

Keep it light

Traveling isn’t always easy so I try to make things emotionally lighter and have perspective when the proverbial Sh$%t hits the fan.

Example: Two weeks ago at LAX, the rental car took almost 2 hours to Get OR LAST WEEK IN DALLAS My schedule was all over the place with 3 IMPROMPTU Meetings I had to take.

Instead of freaking out, this was the perfect opportunity to catch up on emails in LA and respond to instagram DM’s and also implement a little mind over matter. I walked away from LAX feeling a little more caught up on my way to my lunch meeting and I walked away from Dallas feeling I can conquer anything thrown my way. Remember, what we focus on expands. It is so much more constructive and energy preserving to breathe through the last minute moments and tackle them head on with a positive attitude.

Keep things interesting

Cities evolve just as we evolve. I am always staying on top of the newest restaurants (I love beautiful spaces (duh!) and I’m a foodie at heart) so that I am able to create new experiences with my clients — even if I’m not in my home city. I love killing two birds with one stone when I have meetings! Do a little due diligence before arriving by researching some of your favorite bloggers in the destination city or sites such as Eater, MyDomaine or Thrillest. AND!! If you are headed to Music City, my friends at Nashville Guru have done an incredible job providing great hot spots per neighborhood. Xx

Pack mindfully

I always pack a pair of yoga pants and a bikini — just in case!!! It’s always best to be prepared for an impromptu few hours by the pool, some time in the sauna or a quick power flow yoga session. Disclaimer: This has happened to me once out of the 4 years I have been doing this but what a great way to end a productive trip!!

Eat thoughtfully

Food is an energy source for me! I eat to feel good. I do not diet but instead believe in moderation and really listen to my body when it comes to this. My schedule gets super hectic on the road so I always have an emergency RXbar with me, sour patch watermelons (can’t deprive myself of my sweet tooth!) and raw almonds.
