Today, I’m thrilled to share a recent conversation I had with Good Zebra, the inventive snack brand whose protein-packed adult animal crackers are quickly gaining momentum and notoriety (Hello Oprah's Favorite things, Goop, Real Simple and many more mentions). When Good Zebra reached out, I was pushed to make a decision I’d been considering for some time. In recent weeks, I’ve decided to challenge myself even more to embrace my vulnerabilities and share both the beautiful, cheerful things and the not-so-pretty things that mark who I am and why I do what I do. By leading with this side of myself even more and share it with you, I’m challenging my own comfort levels, which, to me is the key to achieving personal power and tremendous growth.
As I thought about the questions Good Zebra asked me, I realized my hardships, the road blocks, and the closed doors that came my way are no different then what we all have faced at some point in our lives. Everything—from a total career change to the relationships I make to a cancer diagnosis—has contributed to my succees and continued growth as an artist and a human. It’s my hope that my story, as well as the story that each and every champion of #TheNewSouthern, will uplift, inspire, and drive each of you in your daily lives. I launched this platform to forge a community of creatives and like-minded individuals so that we may build each other up. Beyond our binding traits and creative passions, we all share common denominators in life... life can be beautiful and life can also be hard. Supporting little victories is only part of the equation. Hearing one another out and understanding the highs and the lows of the journey is the other equally crucial half. And when we open our ears and our hearts to listen, we’re helping our fellow creatives flourish as much as we are helping ourselves.
