HOTELette Dallas is here! Feature with Domino magazine!

November 05, 2018 in AR Photography, AR Press Feature

It’s here! In collaboration with Domino, I’m excited to finally reveal my dear friend Allison Crawford’s latest property… HOTELette Dallas! It’s the third home in Allison’s HOTELette fold, a collection of high-design Airbnb’s that are making it so much easier to travel in style. Whether in Dallas, Nashville or Austin, each of the three properties strike the same note of mid-century chic meets eclectic whimsy, though separately each conveys the spirit of their respective towns.

Located in Dallas’ vibrant Bishop Arts District, HOTELette Dallas is full of bright light, playful accents and of course, a little bit of Texas glam. I just love how Allison embraces the old bones of this home (did you see that mantle!) and we played them up with contemporary design moments, like stacking abstract paintings in the living room nook as a killer asymmetrical chandelier hangs overhead ( I am also honored to be permanently living in this room… a life size photo of me that is). Allison also implements so many of my favorite New Southern trends, like using black as a neutral in the bedroom with a beautiful Lauren Wiliam’s piece to anchor the fireplace. .

Just as Allison is changing the hospitality game, her spaces are changing what it means to create comfortable places to unwind. She drives home the idea that a home can be both stylish and of solace.

Also, a little bit of back story as to why this was such a special trip…… #1. Work with those you love… it creates magic that elevates any project. Allison has turned into a dear friend and I am so honored to be able to work and support the pieces of my heart. #2. When I was fresh off the plane and at the hotel counter checking in, I received a call from my agent. This was a pivotal moment where my breath stopped and my heart raced. She told me we had interest… big interest in the book proposal we sent out into the universe. I’ll never forget this moment…. Think Big Tears in The Big State of Texas! It was a hot July afternoon in Dallas and tears began to pour from my eyes. My emotions were high and mixed with equal parts of surrendering… pure joy…. and total fear. The woman checking me in didn’t know what to do with me and all of my sniffles and asked if I was okay…. This was also the moment my agent told me she had prescheduled 3 meetings for me with 3 of the largest publishers in the country within the next 3 days. I looked across the counter, thanked the woman for her patience while still crying and told her one of the biggest dreams of my life was about to come true. I kept remembering to breathe that day…. I breathed my way through the excitement, the unknown, the anxiety of now having 3 new meetings on top of a busy trip…. My breath was my intention…. and my intention was to remain present and deeply focused on doing the best I could with what was in front of me at each moment. I went upstairs and to my surprise had a glass of champagne waiting for me from the kind woman at the front desk. I read her congratulatory sweet note… left the champagne there because my work had just begun. I quickly shifted gears and started to mentally prep for my client walk through. A few things I take stock in…. my book proposal was my child in a sense… this has been an entity that I have loved and felt exhausted by all at the same time… more importantly this is a body of work that continues to push me to grow as both an artist and a human…. I am grateful for my tears that day… I am grateful to have allowed myself to feel all of my emotions and to continue to put things out into the universe rooted in deep love. This in and of itself is a gift for me and the beginning of another journey as I continue to write this book.

So, I am leaving you with these thoughts today, the more we allow ourselves to lean into our light, the more we allow ourselves to lean into our creativity, and the easier it is to lean into our calling, whatever it may be, in life. Sending you all good vibes, lots of love and don’t forget to VOTE THIS TUESDAY!!!!

Alyssa Rosenheck's The New Southern Artist Spotlight with Emily Jeffords of Greenville, South Carolina

The New Southern | Artist Spotlight: Emily Jeffords

October 22, 2018 in The New Southern, TNS Spotlight

When she isn’t spending her days soaking up the sunlight while painting, Emily Jeffords is a teacher, speaker, and mother of three in Greenville, South Carolina.  As a female creative who truly loves what I do, I greatly admire women within the creative industry who are able to enjoy the journey of cultivating a life which ignites a flame within them. Emily does just this as an abstract impressionist painter, with nearly 10 years of experience under her belt, and the architect of her life — she is creating with color to communicate beyond words. For her, painting is so much more than what’s brushed onto the canvas.

Working out of an 1890’s white-washed studio with watercolor, acrylic, canvas on paper and mixed media — Emily uses her art to find peace and grace in the world in which she lives. Each piece tells its own, unexpected story. After years of traveling and experiencing a wide variety of cultures and lifestyles, she processes through a very unique lens and appreciates art on a spiritual level. With the belief that the most significant objects within a home are the handmade, the old, the books and, of course, the art — it’s no question that Emily is a gem, bringing life and connection to the New Southern movement. She is a beautiful ode to a life well lived while blending textures, mixing patterns, allowing the magic to come to her and naturally moving with the ebb and flow of it all.

From her excitement about the growing tribe of young female artists who are reinterpreting Southern charm to her life motto, “Do it for the process” — I couldn’t wait to introduce Emily’s way of doing art and life, in general, to The New Southern.

Alyssa Rosenheck: Tell us about yourself….

Emily Jeffords: I am an internationally collected artist, a teacher, speaker, and mother of three...Working out of an 1890’s mill house, turned art studio. I have been working as a full-time artist for nearly 10 years and am honored to have my work in countries across the globe.

AR: How are you modernizing / updating southern style with your art?

EJ: The south has a long history with artwork, from ornate portraits of fancy ladies and gents, to the folk art of the working class. The art scene is still vibrant and growing in most Southern cities. What excites me is the tribe of younger artists who are feeding off the lush inspiration that the Southern landscape and its people provide — artists who are reinterpreting that charm into something fresh, colorful, abstracted, and modern. I am proud to be a part of this group of talented women who are taking a fresh look at our surroundings.

AR: What innovative trends are you seeing with Southern Style across the country?

EJ: New uses of bright colors and pastels have been a long tradition in the South and that trend has not only crept outside of the Southern borders, but has basically taken the world by storm. Post pinks, warm yellows, vibrant greens…all mixed with an earthy esthetic that is welcoming and warm. Also, because we have such a gentle climate, plants and gardening play such an enviable roll in our design concept. Bringing the lush landscape inside, filling a room with plants, looking out over a garden — these are perhaps my favorite decorating “techniques”.

AR: What are your favorite hometown design interior boutiques?

EJ: My absolute favorite local boutiques are nearly polar opposites in appearance, but both carry a similar soul: intentional, artistic, unassuming beauty.

Art & Light Gallery — mostly a gallery, but so welcoming and wonderfully presented. It doesn’t feel stodgy or high-brow, and yet it carries some of the most innovative and beautiful artwork I’ve seen.

We Took the Woods — Another local boutique featuring a moody mix of nature-inspired home products, vintage and antique gems, and beautifully crafted home goods.

AR: Favorite shade of white and black paint color?

EJ: We used Ethereal White by Sherwin Williams for 90% of our home (we live in a 1960’s mid century house in the woods) and really love the neutral color and light it brings into the space.

AR: What’s your life motto?

EJ: “Do it for the process.” As an artist and creative person, it can be so easy to find value only in the end product, but the process is where joy is located. The movement, decision-making, the repetition and creative rhythm — the process holds satisfaction.

AR: The place you go to get inspired?

EJ: I’m a firm believer in creating a habit of inspiration (meaning you can trigger inspiration in your own mind whenever needed because you are in such a consistent rhythm of doing so). But, when I really, really want a strong dose of inspiration, I go to the countryside (preferably in France) or a State/National park and spend time in a mindfulness practice followed by me taking 100 pictures of scenes and elements that bring me peace.

AR: The key to making a house a home? What does a home need more of and less of?

EJ: A home gains a soul when its inhabitants live fully and joyfully within its walls. While the actual objects matter very little in that regard, they do tell a visual story and bring the spirit of the home to life. My favorite objects in a home are ones with history and connection or bring life —collected, handmade, old, new, plants, books, ART… Objects with some life inside of them bring life into a room.

AR: Design advice you’ve received that made all the difference?

EJ: When I married my husband we were advised to keep our home very neutral and to bring in our individual personalities through the accessories and artwork. We have embraced that and have tried to give our home a minimalistic foundation while going a bit overboard on the things we love most (plants, artwork, and objects that trigger beautiful memories.)

AR: What’s your favorite housewarming gift?

EJ: I love to give plants in these moments because they bring a bit of life and vitality with them – and who doesn’t need an extra bit of green in their space?

AR: The one shade that changes everything? Tell us what mood it evokes and when/how you’ve used it.

EJ: White.  It is the most transformative color, making every shade nearby more alive and vibrant.

Alyssa Rosenheck The New Southern with Shea McGee of Studio McGee in Round Top, TX Creative Workshop with The Vintage Roundtop

The New Southern | The Vintage Roundtop Recap

October 09, 2018 in The New Southern, TNS Round Up, AR Photography, AR Interviews, AR SPEAKING EVENTS, AR Business

One of the greatest joys in my career is being able to spread light beyond the lens. For me, this means supporting women, championing creative entrepreneurs and being an advocate for my clients. My growth as a creative entrepreneur is directly correlated with being vulnerable and sharing my love through my craft. This is the same love that I hope will bring light to your day, the same love that has propelled me into creating a strong community with the #TheNewSouthern. The New Southern is inclusive. This isn’t a special club that you are born into…everyone is welcome and everyone is loved. The New Southern is a design and lifestyle movement rooted in unity. Our common denominators are our creative compulsions, life pivots, thinking outside the box, pioneering new ways, being authentic, leading with deep love and creative prosperity that will inspire generations to come.

It is through our stories that we are able to connect and it is through love we are able to grow. So, when Paige and Smoot Hull of The Vintage Roundtop invited me alongside Shea McGee of Studio Mcgee to teach a creative Workshop, I, of course said yes to the opportunity to help empower and inspire others in living their best life. It was also great to do so alongside Shea who is authentic and such a strong female entrepreneur (A true light in the word). I was fresh off a New York client shoot and now headed to Round Top, Texas with my Stetson in hand.

As a leading interiors and architectural photographer and stylist, I’ve managed to step outside of the box and pioneer a new way of doing business in the industry. I have learned a new normal with discomfort. I push my own limits and challenge my own beliefs everyday. For every success I have had, I have also failed. Failure and fear are the same to me…they are both inevitable, they need to be used as tools, and they need to be embraced in order to make your dreams come true. I was able to share the tools which I have acquired from being in the corporate world, the gifts I learned through my experience with cancer, how I started my creative businesses, and my goal in creating a community VS. an audience on social media.

This was a humbling weekend filled with deep love. I was so honored and inspired by all that attended and grateful for all of those who traveled great lengths to hear Shea and I discuss our business insight. Thank you to both Paige and Smoot for being such gracious and loving hosts. To all of those who weren’t able to make the workshop, I want to tell you something…There isn’t a blueprint to success...it is as simple as embracing your fears, being willing to fail and continuing to put one foot in front of the other in the most authentic of ways. I am here to help guide you and encourage you with the light beyond my lens. Much love you you all today!! Xx

For those that weren’t able to join us — here is a bit of what you missed! Here are my fun, easy tips on how to shoot:

One

The best camera is the one you have in your hand AND the best object to shoot is the one you are naturally drawn to.

Two

My favorite iPhone photo app: A Color Story

Three

Intuitive Shooting: Ask yourself these questions…. Your answers will connect you to the moment.

  1. What is your Why? Ask yourself this everyday.

  2. What are you Naturally Drawn to?

Out Now: Allure Magazine Feature with Jen Auerbach of Clary Collection!

October 01, 2018 in AR Photography, AR Press Feature

A beautiful bathroom reveals a lot about a person and their family. Bathrooms are intimate spaces, where one begins their day, splashing cool water on their face, taking a look in the mirror and perhaps singing in the shower with kiddos close by. It’s the place where intentions are set, often a personal haven, designed beautifully, with streamlined cleanliness and your personal needs as inspiration.

I recently had the privilege of shooting a bathroom designed with that very notion in mind. The breathtaking, light-filled bathroom of Jen Auerbach, the Nashville-based co-founder of the clean beauty line Clary Collection, is featured this month in Allure’s October Beauty issue. The space, which strikes that perfect balance of beauty and functionality, is dotted with charming details that add a touch of Jen’s personality at every turn, like a small-scale vintage crystal pendant light and floral needlepoint chair. I love the coupling of white subway tile walls with that statement black and white geometric floor tile, seamlessly pairing a clean, classic moment with a big, maximalist punch.

This shoot was full of so much laughter and Jen was an absolute delight to work with. We played around with florals (a LOT of them!) and took full advantage of the Clary Collection’s gorgeous packaging, displaying a slew of her oils and products on the countertop. The space is so simple, but the design is impactful, making the space an absolute dream to photograph. Thank you so much Allure and Jen for a wonderful day!
