How to achieve a Fresh Coastal Aesthetic with StyleMePretty Living!

Part of what makes The New Southern so inspiring is the notion of mixing tradition with newness. There's no more authentic way of integrating tradition into a space than injecting inspirations from your family, childhood, and heritage into a home. For my friend Raquel Garcia, who spent her childhoods in spaces honoring her Cuban background and always just steps from the beach, this is her M.O.

Based in coastal Connecticut, Raquel has broken the stereotype of New England prep and stuffiness. Her designs are a breath of fresh air, full of airy textiles, unexpected pastel pairings, and unique objects that reflect the home's adjacency to the shore. Upon entering her spaces, their warmth and subtle beauty basically envelope you in and embrace, and you can almost feel the sea breeze wafting through the room as you look at the images. It's these kinds of spaces that I find such joy in shooting, because their light, charm and beauty translate so perfectly behind the lens.

Style Me Pretty Living Feature in The Bluegrass State!

Not long ago, I traveled to Bowling Green, Kentucky to collaborate with designer Jessica Dolan on her new family home, which she designed with the help of some fun accessories from some of my favorite and talented friends, Amber Interiors, Studio McGee and Caitlin Wilson. My main goal was to add thoughtful layers to the clean-lined space, creating a bit more depth within each frame. It is important to me to have each image tell a story and communicate a warm invitation to the viewer. If my images can add a little lightness to your day while evoking inspiration, I know it's been a successful collaboration.

As I walked through her home and envisioned how it should translate behind the lens, I instantly wanted to fill the kitchen's beautiful open shelves with fresh greenery. This adds life to a space. This is also a pretty economical fresh way to incorporate an extra layer. Implementing green, organic touches is one of my favorite styling habits. It's a trick that adds a little thing I call proof of life, which is visually appealing and offers a comfortable, lived-in feel.

Jessica's choice to use shades of blue and specifically, navy, is representative of a larger trend I've notice among spaces in The New Southern repertoire. Blue and white is very much a classic color palette, but when used in unexpected ways, like painted cabinets or linen upholstery, it feels fresh and relaxed. It's a nod to the preppy, pulled-together side of Southern tradition without feeling buttoned-up or unattainable. We had such a great time working together to create these moments, and I'm so fortunate to share them with you thanks to my dear friends at StyleMePretty Living!

Playrooms aren’t just for the kids, you know! In Memphis, I shot designer Sean Anderson’s recent project, a light, bright, and multi-functional playroom. The idea? Design a space that the family can grow into! Which means keeping the furniture classic and durable, the floor open with space for toys and tiny bare feet, and creating a workspace for Mom and Dad. I personally like to incorporate the sentiment of love everyday. In a world of grand gestures, I think it is important to experience this feeling in a stripped down basic way and apply it to everything we pursue. I find love to be simple in a complex world and I see it in even the smallest details that exist with in the spaces I shoot and amongst my nearest and dearest.
